The Guardian looks at the growing protests concerning legislature that would force those seeking abortions in Virginia to undergo a painful vaginal-uterine probing (internal ultrasound) before being allowed the termination procedure.

Even England is honing in on the disgusting Virginia legislature.

All this happening is crap, but I think tagging the word painful before vaginal-uterine ultrasound is kind of pushing it.  They can be uncomfortable, but for most people, they don’t cause pain.  I’ve had 4 of them, the first being when I was 14, and as long as there isn’t some kind of medical condition causing pain, they’re really not bad.  I’m not speaking on behalf of everyone, obviously, and I’m not including emotional/mental pain.  But really.

I’m not going to couch my words; nonconsensual penetration with no medical justification will doubtless involve pain for a large number of people and to ignore that pain and those people is to thoroughly downplay the seriousness of this legislation. Forced penetatration and pain go together fairly predictably, and this is quite clearly the reason for the bill: it’s designed to scare those wishing to terminate a pregnancy: “if you don’t want to continue being pregnant, we will forcibly penetrate you before we allow you that legal right”.

^agree^ In addition, here is a direct quote from the article that is exemplary of how incredibly problematic and horrifying these VA bills are:

Proponents of the plan believe women should be given longer to confront the choices they are about to make, despite the fact that they are likely to have thought long and hard about the decision and are in the midst of a very emotional and stressful time.

It should be infuriating to everyone, beyond those who have a uterus, that a government would feel the need to determine, through legislature, the amount of time a person “needs” to consider having an abortion. A persons decision to have an abortion should remain that person’s sole decision, sole right and should be done on their own terms, in their own time and upon their own valition - not manipulated and then traumatized through elaborate fear tactics and outright disregard for female agency for the sole purpose of furthering the right wing political agenda and considerable bleed over from religion to state government. As fuckyeahgenderstudies is explicitly arguing: government sanctioned nonconsensual penetration with no medical justification is absolutely, in its entirety, degrading, oppressive and downright unconstitutional. We have a very serious problem for the citizens of Virginia if these bills are seen through to the full extent.
